It is the writer’s opinion that Barry Green would have been the best tennis player to have passed through SCOTS PGC College during its first 100 years.

Those Past Students who knew Barry “Burry’ Green would remember of course that he played in the 1st IV while at school – he was captain of the team in 1947 – but I doubt many of you would have realised what he achieved in this sport and others after leaving school.  Listed below is what he achieved:-

Winner first Queensland Age Championships Under 18 singles

Winner Queensland Junior (under 19) singles

Queensland Interstate Junior Team – Linton cup 1948

Queensland Interstate Senior Team

Runner-up in (5) Queensland Singles Championships

Winner of (5) Queensland Doubles Championships

Played in Asia & Europe 1953-54

Grand Slam Events

Wimbledon – 1953 – Singles – Lost to runner-up Kurt Nielsen

Doubles –Lost to Drobny & Patty

Queensland Open (4) Singles Champion

Most notable wins – Mal Anderson immediately after he won the US Open

Notable opponents – Laver, Emerson, Sedgman, Hoad, Rosewell, Seixas, Rose, Anderson, Quist, Drobny, Patty and Kramer

Retired from overseas commitments in 1954 at age 24 because of illness of father and re-entered the family business.

Member of the International Club – Qualifications = Played in (4) Grand Slams one to be overseas.

Family

Barry married and has three children – a girl and two boys – and also six grandchildren.

His youngest son, David, was (4) times a Member of the Australian Olympic 3 Day Event Equestrian Team. He is now assistant coach for the Australian Team.
